Ok, to start this new space a rewiew of Marvel's last piece: Ant-Man.
Since it's two weeks since it's release almost everyone already wriete about it. But I like to do things this way: rewiew a movie only after I had some time to digest it. Working that way I can avoid be caught by the "buzz" aroud the subject.
And a little word of warning, I write reviews with the purpose of being read after the movie. It's not my intention to say to anyone if they should or not watch a pice (but I confess that can happen sometimes, often near the release of a Transformers movie). But what I try to do is share my wiew about the film and when it's the case create some discussion.
But before I get to the movie itself let we go back a little on time and put a little details about it in perspective...
Even if is a so called "phase 2" movie Ant-man has it's conceiving origins back to 9 year ago. It is not a "new" project and it's been in production before than the smash second phase hit Guardians of The Galaxy. The project was in the hands of director Edgar Wright since it's beginning but he and Marvel go separated ways a little before the project started to really start. Pento Reed took his place as director.
I will consider that you are not a movie freak and dont know who the hell is Edgar Wright. Well let me enlighten you. Wright is the director and one of the creative minds, along with Simon Pegg, of the trilogy of blood and ice cream. I plan to write about it any time in the future but if you never heard of it google it and be happy. He's also the director of the astonishing Scott Pilgrin vs the world, a little masterpiece that alone proves his capacity in working in perfect harmony with story, characters, action and special effects.
But why is important to know about that? Simple. A very big chunk of what it work's on Ant-man comes from him.
It's well know that when a fan favorite director like Wright left's a big project because of "artistic differences" with a big, mean, blockbuster oriented studio the fans has a tendency of rejecting it. I'm not doing that even being a Wright fan. I watched Ant Man with my mind and hearts open. But with you are familiar with Wright's work and watched some of the pre production material you can perceive very well the old director's input.
I'm not familiar with Pentton Reed's other works but based solely in what I see in Ant Man I can see that his work is mediocre. The pace, how he direct's actors, how he place's the camera, if it's not terrible is at least boring. Pay attention in the difference in the boring development of characters when the action takes place. Well how Ant man's fight, move, how his powers work, all of that came from Wright and I dare to say that most of how the action's scenes would play were already in place when Peaton's jumped on board. I remember seeing pre production computer graphics tests that turned exactly the same in the movie.
But it is a bad movie? No. Far form that. But we get a Thor instead of a Guardians of The Galaxy with this one. Pall Rudd is charismatic actor how will have better chances to show his talents in future marvel's installment's. But the movie has two major problems: 1) You can see the plot coming from a mile away even with you are not trying; 2) It fails every time it try to get emotional and badly. I can't even blame the actors since the problem is clear the director and the poor dialogue.
Let's gossip a little more since it seems more interesting then the movie itself. What happened with Wright and Marvel. The word in the street says it's diferences were 1) The emotional tone seems to be something desired by Marvel. Well, seeing how badly it played out I have no choice but to give Wright a extra point.
2) The movie should be more integrated to the Marvel "cinematic universe". Well, here i got a little divided. The movie does a good integration with what come before but i think it would worked better with a "stand alone" posture.
I know that the marvel "cinematic universe" gives orgasms to a lot of people but i particularly have o lot of issues with that. But that's a talk for another day.
To finalize let me say my own explanation on what happend. Remember that little amazing movie that i mentioned in the beginning Scott Pilgrin? Although is a amazing movie it bombed in the box office, both domestically and worldwide. Hollywood only understand one language:money! So as the movie fails Wright losts the power to do what he want's with Ant Man and so he leaves,
Well, hope you enjoyed the read and see you a next time .
